Two cases of Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in Myasthenia Gravis

Abstract

|
The authors applied preoperative plasma exchange for a 18-year-old male with myasthenia gravis prior to thymectomy. Three plasma exchanges were performed before thymectomy and clinical symptoms were much improved so that thymectomy was performed without complications.
Another case is a 59-year-old female suffered from myasthenia gravis with severe respiratory failure. She was resistant to anticholinesterases, corticosteroids and thy￢mectomy. The thymus showed thymoma on pathologic examination. After plasma exchanges she improved clinically and her respiration returned sufficiently to allow discontinuation of assisted mechanical respiration.
We report these cases with brief review of literature.
